“灵璧一石天下奇,声如青铜色如玉”,这是宋代诗人方岩对灵璧石发出的由衷赞叹。灵璧石,又称磐石, 产于安徽省灵璧县磐石山北麓平畴间。古有泗水流过山北。灵璧石开发极早,早在《尚书·禹贡》中,就有徐州上贡“泗滨浮磐”的记录。磐,即指磐石,孔安国 《尚书·传》解释道:“泗水涯水中见石,可以为磐。” 另据《拘橡篇》记载:“泗水之滨多美石。”战国时代齐国的孟尝君得知后,即遣使者“以币求之”。泗滨人获悉以“养食客数千”名满天下的孟尝君爱石,很高 兴,便满满装了十车美石要送去,而孟尝君为此竟也亲临泗滨。后来,这批美石分给“诸庙以为磐”。其实,“洒滨美石”就是后来所称的“灵璧石”。灵璧石为世人瞩目,已有三四千年的历史。

灵璧石不仅开发早,而且盛名久享,在供石家族中历来占据显赫的地位。《云林石谱》汇载石品一百一十六种,灵璧石被放在首位介绍;明人文震亨撰写《长物志》,称“石以灵璧为上,英石次之”。“天下第一石”——乾隆皇帝对灵璧石如此高的赞美，实在不无道理。灵璧磬石色如墨，光如镜，其色泽秀丽，螺纹清楚、雅致、分布有规律，质地致密、细腻、坚韧、光洁，无杂斑、污点、裂纹及其他缺陷，块度大；磬云石颜色黝黑，有金属般的光辉，古朴端庄。是居家、收藏、馈赠友人的上好佳品，彰显艺术品味和文化底蕴。另外，灵璧磬石富含多种对人体有益微量元素，其表面滑亮浑厚，纹理细蜜，光洁照人，制作的工艺品如茶具、文具、针砭等,乃为珍品。

灵璧石不但稀世奇珍，而且高贵典雅，乃传世之宝，为雅世必藏之物，灵璧石，深藏地下600米处，乃灵璧渔沟镇独有--因产于安徽灵璧县渔沟区内磬云山而得名，历史悠久，享有“天下第一石”美誉，是开发较早的一 种美石，位居我国四大名石之首，灵璧县渔沟区也被誉为“中国磬石之乡”。其又名“八音石”，击之声如青铜，音韵悦耳，制作的乐器为历代所珍重。1986年，以灵璧磬石为原料，精心研制出编磬、鱼寿磬、石方响、缶等古乐器，被南京歌舞团搬上舞台。  

据中国最早的地理书〈禹贡〉记载，“泗滨浮磬”正是当今灵璧县渔沟区内磬云山。其山石色如墨、光如镜、声如青铜，为历代人所称道，用其制作的乐器更为历代 所珍重。宋史曾多处记载历代皇家来灵璧采磬之声。相传，在北宋时，有人取磬云石制作砚台，雕刻上“灵璧小峰”的画面，献给当朝皇帝宋徽宗，宋徽宗对雕砚十 分喜爱，便信手在小峰旁刻书“山高月小，水落石出”八个字。从此，灵璧磬石身价倍增，更加引人瞩目。到了明、清两代，各地来灵璧采磬石者越来越多。据〈灵璧县志〉记载：“石之灵光闪烁，色如壁玉。”“灵璧”二字由此而得名。

自古以来，灵璧石工艺品一直被历代皇室使用收藏。今天，灵璧石工艺品依然完全采用整石精干雕琢，既继承传统工艺，又融入现代制作工艺，具有极高的收藏、使用价值。由于灵璧石资源较为稀罕，产量极少，加上采集制作难度大，特别是白灵石工艺品，实乃工艺品中的佳品，倍受文人雅士青睐，蕴涵着极大升值潜力。

The stone enjoys which enjoys the fame of the "No. 1 Stone in the World". Now let me tell you some stories about them. Lingbi Stone is very famous all over China from long long ago, whinc called"Lingbi stone is the best all over the world, which has jade colour and luster and can sound dulcet movement". They ranked first among the four types of famous Chinese Scholars Rocks. These are found in Lingbi county of Anhui Province, China. They were the most valued stones during the Song dynasty (960-1279 A.D.). The main composition of Lingbi stones is limestone. 

They are also known for their hardness and dense textures that produce light chime sound when they are tapped. From the sound they produce the stones are also named resonant or chime rocks. They are fine-grained, delicately textured limestone and lie deep in the red mud of the Qingyun mountains. Naturally shaped, they need no cutting or carving. Depleted after generations of mining, high quality Lingbi are now quite rare. They are hard and an ordinary knife cannot cut them. Their mineral composition is such that they produce a metallic, resonant sound when tapped. Hence they are also called 'resonant rocks' and 'Eight-tune-stone' ,(bayin stone in Chinese). They were sometimes used for making chimes and are thus also known as 'chime rocks'. Lingbi rocks are beautiful and clear-cut, with a frame of soft lines. Combining masculine beauty with antique simplicity, they have been admired by connoisseurs for centuries. In the Northern Song dynasty, Emperor Huizong wrote this inscription on one Lingbi in his collection: "The mountain is high while the moon looks small the water ebbs and the rock juts forth."("shan gao yue xiao ,shui luo shi chu"山高月小，水落石出 in Chinese).
